Violin and Viola Tuition, Drawings of Buildings

My name is Ian. I play the viola in the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (a viola is slightly bigger and deeper than a violin, and is the middle voice of the string family).  I was born in Australia and have a Diploma in Performance from the Canberra School of Music.

I have a large teaching practice. I teach both privately (in my own home) and in eleven schools in Christchurch and North Canterbury. I enjoy working with both children and adults. Some of the things that have been said about me:

"A reliable, hard worker who is friendly, patient, of excellent character and always willing to help out. I believe Ian would be an asset to any school ... which requires a patient, dedicated and caring person." - D. Casey, St George Girls' High School, Sydney.

"His pupils have attained high standards of musicianship and performance." - Kevin R. Boyce, Principal, St Michael's Church School, Christchurch

"He is clearly a valuable asset to Christchurch." - Donald Maurice, Professor of Music and Associate Director, New Zealand School of Music, Wellington

I can arrange hire of a violin at a very reasonable cost.

My tuition fee is $20 per half-hour lesson, and the first lesson is free. With younger children I sometimes give a shorter lesson of 20 minutes at $15. Some of my pupils have done violin exams through the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. All have passed and some have achieved distinctions.

I may be able to teach in your home, depending on where you live, for a sightly higher fee.

My foremost aim is to make violin interesting and enjoyable for the pupil. After a fairly short time my pupils can play simple but satisfying pieces from classical, popular and celtic traditions.

As well as music, I do black and white drawings of buildings.  I've had many commissions to draw buildings in Christchurch, including The Devon Bed and Breakfast, Robbies Bar Cranford Street, and Cleary's Hairdressing Salon in Woolston, as well as numerous private houses. My drawings are done in pen and ink and are A3 size (suitable to frame).  They make an original gift, and in reduced form can be used for letterheads, publicity, Christmas cards and so on. A black and white drawing is timeless and speaks of quality.

Some comments on my drawings:

"I am thrilled with the drawing [of my church]" - Father Paul Duncan, parish priest, Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Christchurch.

"Aunty cried when we gave her the drawing." - J. Whitaker, Christchurch.
